L to R: Matt Benson, Trace Solutions, Millicent Chisom Didacus, Winner of Final Year Project, and Kevin Grice, Trace Solutions

Trace Solutions were honoured to sponsor Brunel University’s 2025 Software Innovation Event, organised by the University’s world famous computer department.

This well-attended annual event took place on 27th March and gave Computer Science students the chance to demonstrate their most innovative projects to peers, Brunel staff and industry professionals.

Trace not only sponsored the event, but also judged the Year 2 Computer Science Undergraduate Degree Group Project prize, and the Final Year Student’s Project prize.

The theme of the winning Group Software Project was that they should be based on UN Sustainable Development Goals. Projects were developed using design thinking, lean innovation, and agile software development principles.

For the Final Year Project category, individualComputer Science students developed projects as part of their final year dissertations. These projects varied widely, as the students had complete flexibility in domain area and choice of project.

Kevin Grice and Matt Benton, company directors from Trace Solutions, had the unenviable tasks of judging the entries. “Each student was able to concisely articulate their idea and the need it was addressing, then show us working demos” said Matt.

The event was hugely well attended

Kevin added “ I’m really impressed with the enthusiasm of the students and the staff. The quality of the work has been amazing. Technical architecture and execution, UI and UX, the ability to clearly communicate the business problem being addressed – so impressive.”

Kate Hone, head of the Computer Science Department at Brunel, said: “We really appreciate Trace Solutions’ participation in this event. It makes it so much more meaningful for our students to demonstrate to real world practitioners, as opposed to just the academics.”

The winners chosen by Trace were

Final Year Project: Millicent Chisom Didacus with GuardUp App

Designed to help prevent sexual harassment on campus, the app provides an easy-to-use UI to help guide anyone feeling vulnerable to their nearest safe space, alerting an emergency contact, tips on how to remain calm, as well as basic self-defence. More importantly it provided data to identify locations where incidents occurred to help campus security make those areas safer. The use case could easily be extended to lone working situations in the Facilities Management space.

Second Year Group Project:  Team EV-MI

Promoting sustainability with personal transport, this app helps people select and make informed choices when buying electric vehicles, and then supports them through the ownership journey, helping to make the switch from traditional to sustainable fuels as easy as possible.
